To keep your Blackberry Pearl running at the peak of its capabilities, youre going to want to make sure youre not wasting valuable memory on stuff you dont need. Youd be surprised at what hogs up the memory. Well look at a few of the main items and how to delete or manage them.
It's important to know how much memory is available on your Pearl. This can be done quickly by following these steps:
1. Select the little icon that mostly like looks like a wrench. This is the options icon.
2. Scroll to status and click.
3. The memory capacity of your phone is listed as FILE TOTAL.
4. FILE FREE lists the amount of memory available right now.
Our goal is to increase the number listed under FILE FREE. The bigger that number, the better your phone will run.
One of the first things you can do is clean out your inbox. This is pretty straight forward, but something that's often overlooked. If you don't need it on your phone, delete it.
Content Compression
I've had content compression active since I first brought my phone home, so I don't know how much memory this will open up. If you don't have it activated, do it now and you'll open up more memory quickly.
1. Start on your main screen (the one with all the icons).
2. Click on the little wrench icon (options).
3. Scroll to and click on Security Options.
4. Move down to GENERAL SETTINGS and click.
5. Move down to CONTENT COMPRESSION and click.
6. If it doesnt say Enabled click on it and select it now.
7. Press the button just left of the pearl (it should have 7 little dots on it).
8. Scroll down and select Save.
That was easy wasn't it? Now you have content compression enabled on your phone and you'll open up a good amount of memory. This not only compression pictures, video and music, but also items in your calendar and inbox.
Removing Unused Programs
I think I've played Brick Breaker once while in the doctors office. It was fun, but it's not worth the memory it eats up. I deleted it. I also recommend going through all of the applications installed and removing those you rarely or never use.
1. Open up the main screen with all of your icons.
2. Select the wrench icon. This will open up your options.
3. Click ADVANCED OPTIONS at the top of the list
4. Highlight and select Applications. It may take a few seconds to build the list of apps.
5. Wait for your Pearl to build the list of applications.
6. Press the Blackberry button (it's just left of the Pearl).
7. Select DELETE and press the pearl.
8. Scroll down to Delete and press the pearl button.
NOTICE: You may be asked to reboot your Pearl before the deletion process is completed.
Once you've completed these steps, you'll certainly notice how much faster your Pearl is running. Applications should open up much quicker. If they don't there are a number of other steps you can take that I'll explore later.
