If you are deciding on a profession in WoW and would like one that you can use to make a little (or a lot) of gold, Herbalism is one you should seriously consider. It offers benefits to nebies in that they can start using the profession immediately and also to more advanced players who can use Herbalism to make thousands of gold.
If you are just starting out and have already decided you want to pursue Herbalism, I suggest you choose Undead as your race if you are with Horde and Human race if you are with the Alliance. Tauren are another good option as they start with a 15 point bonus in this profession.
If you want to pair two professions together to get the best combination for making gold, then I suggest you link Herbalism and Mining. This combination allows for fast gold production in short periods of time when used wisely. If you want to use your herbalism profession to create something of value, you should combine it with Alchemy.
You'll need to be at level 5 before you can start your profession. Once you do the basic herbalism training, the only herb you'll initially be able to find is something called Silverleaf. Silverleaf is actually more valuable than copper so make sure you use this as a money making technique in the early stages.
If you travel just a short distance from the starting area you'll be able to find the Silverleaf herb. If you spend 8 or so minutes gathering this herb you will have a complete stack which can be sold for at least 1 piece of gold in the auction house. It may not sound like much but for a brand new character that's pretty good going.
The value of Silverleaf and other similar herbs will change from day to day in the Auction House. Keep an eye on the value and cash in when they are selling for a high price. You'll need to spend a lot of time initially searching for low value items, in time however you will be able to start searching for higher value herbs. Ghost Mushrooms and Black Lotus (which you can get in the Hinterlands) are 2 examples that can bring you good gold profits for little work.
