The acquisition of small startup company Android back in July 2005 by Google is generally seen as the birth date of the Google Android operating system which was co-founded by the four individuals Chris White, Nick Sears, Rich Miner and Andy Rubin.

Google officially released most of the Android operating system under the open source, free software " Apache license.

It is not easy to understand with some of the technological terms used in Internet language. This text will define the Android operating system and features associated with the Google Android operating system.

The Android operating system, or software platform, has been primarily designed for mobile devices. It is based on a modified Linux Kernel. Android developers make use of Google developed Java libraries that aid them in the development of applications for the operating system and mobile device.

Important features of the Android operating system are: Messaging, connectivity, storage, web browser, a virtual machine, media support, layouts and hardware and development support.

The Android phone supports both SMS and MMS messaging capabilities including threaded text messages unlike Apple's iPhone. Some of the technologies supported by Android are EDGE, GSM, CDMA, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and EV-DO. The SQLite database software is used for data storage.

The Android platform adapts to larger libraries as 2D Graphics, VGA and 3D based on Open GL, traditional smart phone layouts and 1.0 specification. The web-kit application framework is an open source adaption for the Android web browser.

The Dalvik virtual machine has been added to the Android platform to run Java applications in a virtual environment. The implementation of the virtual machine has been specifically designed for mobile platforms.

Media formats such as H.264, MP3, MPEG-4, AAC, OGG, JPEG, GIF, PNG are supported by Android. Other features include touch screens, accelerometers, GPS, video/still cameras and accelerated 3D graphics. The Android operating system incorporates a device emulator, tools for debugging, a plug in for the Eclipse IDE and performance profiling.

The Android operating system has been the mobile platform for running Google applications. It ships with several Google applications such as Google Mail, Google Maps or Google Search preinstalled.
